Room of Lies: How To Play

This page is written like a board-game manual: what is in the game, how to set up, how rounds work, and how to run fair, clean sessions with real-life movement.

1. What This Game Is

Room of Lies is a real-life social deduction game managed by website logic. Players physically move around your house, school, or event space while the site tracks:

  • secret roles
  • task progress by QR station
  • reports and meetings
  • voting and ejections
  • host moderation decisions

2. Components

  • One host phone (game master controls)
  • One phone per player
  • Printed QR station cards
  • A real-world meeting area
  • A saved setup preset (recommended)

Host is a moderator role and does not participate as a player.

3. Setup In 10 Steps

  1. Open Host and create room.
  2. Name the game and set min/max players.
  3. Set impostor count and tasks per player.
  4. Set discussion and voting time.
  5. Define meeting zone (example: living room).
  6. Add task station names and QR mappings.
  7. Enable optional roles (Medic, Sheriff, Jester).
  8. Share the 6-digit room code.
  9. Wait for players to join and ready up.
  10. Press Start Round.

4. Role Summary

Role Goal Special Notes
Crew Complete tasks and identify impostors. Can report bodies and vote.
Impostor Eliminate crew until outnumbered. Uses kill action and fake tasks.
Medic Help crew survive. Can shield one player once.
Sheriff Eliminate impostor safely. Wrong shot can self-eliminate.
Jester (optional) Get voted out. Neutral role with unique win.

5. Round Flow (Board-Game Style)

Phase A - Lobby

Players join with code, pick nickname/icon, and ready.

Phase B - Role Reveal

Each player receives a secret role and objectives.

Phase C - Free Movement

Players move in real life and complete QR station tasks.

Phase D - Conflict

Impostor may kill when near target under room rules.

Phase E - Report / Emergency

Meeting starts. Everyone goes to meeting area.

Phase F - Discussion + Vote

Discussion timer, then vote timer, then result.

Phase G - Resume or End

Round continues until win condition is reached.

6. Task Rules

  • Scan the station QR in real location.
  • Complete mini-task in browser.
  • Task completion updates team progress.
  • If ghost tasks are enabled, dead crew can still contribute.

7. Kill + Body Rules

  • Impostor kills by choosing target from in-game list.
  • Dead player enters dead state immediately.
  • If your house rules require it, dead body stays in place until reported.
  • After report, dead players remain silent and cannot vote.

8. Meetings + Voting

  • Meeting starts from report or emergency call.
  • Move phase gives time to reach meeting zone.
  • Discussion phase allows open debate.
  • Voting phase accepts player votes and optional skip vote.
  • Ejected players become dead and cannot rejoin active round.

9. Host (Game Master) Controls

  • Start/end rounds
  • Pause or freeze actions for safety
  • Add/skip meeting move time
  • Moderation decisions in edge cases
  • Load or save reusable presets

Host sees full state for moderation and is intentionally excluded from gameplay.

10. Fair Play + Safety

  • No running in unsafe areas.
  • No blocking stairs or emergency exits.
  • No touching other players or devices.
  • Respect dead-silent and meeting-area rules.
  • Host final decision resolves disputes quickly.

11. Quick Start Card (One Minute)

Host

  1. Open Host
  2. Set players + roles + timers
  3. Generate room code
  4. Start round when ready

Player

  1. Open Join
  2. Enter room code + nickname
  3. Press ready
  4. Play your role and survive

Meeting

  1. Go to meeting zone
  2. Discuss before vote timer ends
  3. Vote or skip
  4. Return to play phase
